Introduction: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hallmark of Orchard House School?

Orchard House School is above all a happy school. We believe that only if a child is happy and actively wants to come to school will his or her potential in the widest sense be maximised. Within a friendly but nevertheless structured and disciplined academic environment, the school aims to bring out the best in its children. Results in the entrance examinations to the leading London preparatory and senior girls' schools have consistently been excellent.

Why is Orchard House so successful?

Mostly because the school enjoys such a happy yet purposeful atmosphere... but also because the school does not stint to obtain the very best staff, to support them with the very best in resources and to ensure an appropriate and rewarding learning environment.

Is there an entrance test?

We do not believe in testing very young children. Consequently there is no entrance test for children entering the Den (aged 3) or Lower 1 (aged 4); but irrespective of the year group of entry parents are expected to indicate any circumstances that might prove a difficulty in educational terms.

For children entering the school in Form 1 or 2, the school may wish briefly to assess the child to establish a reference point. Entry into Form 3 and above is by examination, interview and a reference from the child's current school. All admissions are subject to the school's registration and entry procedures and are at the headmistress's discretion. There is often a waiting list.

How do we know if Orchard House School is right for our child?

It is essential you visit any school you are considering for your child. As you visit Orchard House - and other schools - you will be able to see the children at work and play and, vitally, to gauge the atmosphere.

You should also ask others about the schools you are considering. Orchard House, and its sister schools Bassett House in Kensington and Prospect House in Putney, enjoy pre-eminent reputations both with parents and also with those schools to whom they send children for examination. We are proud of the three schools' reputations.

How do we arrange to visit the school?

The headmistress regularly shows the school to prospective parents and these visits afford a perfect opportunity to ask her - or the children! - all the questions that may occur to you.

Visits may be arranged through the school office by telephoning +44 (20) 8742 8544 or by emailing info@orchardhs.org.uk. Open Days are held in October and February; these provide additional opportunities to visit the school.

May we register our child before visiting the school?

No, you must visit the school first. (The school will permit registration in advance of a visit only in exceptional circumstances.)
