FORM 4 Visit by Henry VIII

Yesterday the children in Form 4 were royally entertained by King Henry VIII! They learned about life in Tudor times, took part in a jousting tournament, and interviewed the King about his loves and life!

SCIENCE Quiz Club science quiz

On Monday, two teams of children from Forms 5 and 6 travelled to Surbiton High Boys’ Preparatory School for the local heats of the Quiz Club national inter-school science championship. The quiz was extremely challenging and the competition tough, but the two Orchard House teams performed extremely well and were a credit to themselves and to the school. The children worked brilliantly as a team to navigate through a range of questions on topics ranging from dinosaurs to the stars.

To any children in Forms 4 or 5 who would like to try to make the team for next year’s Quiz Club challenge, it is never too early to start brushing up on your scientific knowledge!

Love in a Box

Thank you to everyone who donated a box for the ‘Love in a Box’ project, and thank you to the parents who volunteered to help to collect and check the boxes. Over 140 boxes will soon be on their way to be given as Christmas presents to under-privileged children in Eastern Europe. The school has been supporting this project for over fifteen years and more details about the Mustard Seed Relief Mission and the work it does can be found here.

Power of One’ message

This week in assembly the children were reminded about the ‘Power of One’ message which was first shared with them in anti-bullying workshops. Through rôle play, teachers performed scenes which demonstrated physical, verbal, emotional and cyber bullying. The children were reminded that each one of them individually has the power to prevent bullying, and to ensure that no one is a bystander, victim or bully. They retook the ‘Power of One’ oath: “I will not bully others. I will not stand by whilst others are bullying. I will report and deal with bullying wherever I see it… because I have… the Power of One.”

The ‘MM’ challenge

Last week Mrs Edwards set the children a challenge to guess what the initials MM stand for, giving them a hint that the phrase is related to the six Orchard House values. Congratulations to the winner of the challenge who was announced in today’s assembly! There were many different suggestions, including many who guessed Mrs Majic, but the correct phrase was “Manners Matter”. In today’s assembly Mrs Edwards reminded the children on the importance of good manners.

Lovereading4schools

Reading lists have been set up for each year on lovereading4schools. The website provides an easy and fun way for parents to access many suggestions for a wide range of books. It also allows you to download extracts to see at a glance if a book appeals to your child. You may need to register for a parent account when you first visit the site. Once logged in you will see reading lists for each year, favourites lists and lists for different genres.
