Reception at Orchard House

Reception is where your child’s formal educational journey begins, building on the skills and confidence developed at nursery. At Orchard House School, our Reception classes offer a nurturing and stimulating environment where young learners can flourish academically, socially and emotionally through our specialised curriculum delivered by our experienced Early Years team.

As a co-educational prep school for children aged 3-11, we offer consistency from Nursery all the way through to Year 6. We are also part of the Dukes Education family, meaning we have provisions to give parents support and access to schooling up to Year 13.

When do children start Reception?

In the UK, children normally start Reception in September of the year they turn five. School years usually run from 1 September to 31 August with holidays. So, when your child will start depends on their birthday falling within that cycle and not their age at the time.

Most children will join Orchard House in the September after they turn three, in our nursery, before progressing to Reception the following year. We also welcome a number of children directly into Reception, depending on the availability of places. If you are unsure of which intake applies to your child, our admissions team will be more than happy to advise you.

What is the Reception Curriculum?

Reception is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Designed around how young children take in information, it carefully balances play and active teaching instead of just sitting at a desk.

The Early Years Foundation Stage focuses on seven areas of learning, split into two groups:

The three prime areas, which form the foundation for everything else:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Building social confidence and relationships with others.
  • Communication and Language – listening, speaking and understanding.
  • Physical Development – Motor skills from how to hold a pencil to coordination and balance.

The four specific areas, which build on those foundations:

  • Literacy — early phonics, mark-making and a love of stories
  • Mathematics — counting, number recognition, shape, space and measure
  • Understanding the World — people, communities, the natural world, and past and present
  • Expressive Arts and Design — art, music, drama and imaginative play

Reception at Orchard House sits within our Learning Orchard curriculum. Which combined with our HPL (high-performance learning) philosophy encompasses: Holistic Learning, Leadership, Powerful Knowledge and World Readiness are the pillars of the Learning Orchard, designed to prepare children for life – not just for exams.

Our Early Years provision was recently highlighted as a point of strength in our most recent ISI inspection.

Children in the early years thrive due to a well-structured curriculum and stimulating environment which balances academic and social development”

Moving from Nursery to Reception

The step into Reception can feel like a child’s first big step to some families. And we understand that it’s natural for both children and their parents to feel some nerves along with the excitement of this new chapter.

The benefit of transitioning from Orchard House Nursery into Reception is that the surroundings and faces will be familiar, as well as a curriculum that translates seamlessly from year to year. Families joining from a Little Dukes Nursery or another Dukes Education setting will be eligible for our guaranteed entry policy into Reception (subject to availability) so you can plan with confidence.

For those outside the Dukes Education family, the admissions journey can include a taster morning. This gives them a chance to meet their prospective teachers and peers as well as giving them a glance into life at Orchard House.

Private Reception vs State Reception

The key difference in Early Years is in the delivery of the curriculum, as all Reception classes in England follow the same EYFS framework.

At Orchard House School, families choosing a private Reception class benefit from:

  • A dedicated Early Years site at Rupert Road, purpose-built for Nursery and Reception, with its own outdoor classroom and adventure playground
  • Consistent specialist teaching from Reception age, including PE, music, computing, eurhythmics and French. These same specialists will be with children throughout their school journey from Reception to Year 6.
  • Continuity through to Year 6, and support into some of the UK’s leading senior schools via the Learning Orchard curriculum
  • A wider Dukes Education network, giving families guaranteed progression routes from Little Dukes nurseries
  • Close, regular communication with parents, including regular ‘Open Classroom’ events for parents. Additionally, you can browse our downloadable EYFS handbook setting out exactly what to expect each year

Learning Expectations & Assessment

We use the Early Learning Goals throughout Early Years to gently assess children’s progress towards the expectations for the year. Both assessment and observation are woven into everyday life, aiming to support and reassure each child as an individual.

Our most recent ISI inspection found that activities and adult interaction are tailored to individual needs in the early years. With staff supporting children to build self-knowledge and confidence as they move through the school.

Parents can also download the school’s full EYFS Handbook for a detailed, year-by-year breakdown of what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age do children start Reception in the UK?

In the UK, children normally start Reception in September after turning four.  School years usually run from 1st September to 31st August with holidays so your child must be four before September 1st to begin Reception that year.

What is the Reception curriculum based on?

Reception follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, the statutory curriculum used by all English Nurseries, Pre-schools and Reception classes. It covers seven areas of learning across three prime areas and four specific areas, delivered through a mix of guided teaching and purposeful play. At Orchard House the EYFS framework is enhanced through our bespoke Learning Orchard Curriculum and High Performance Learning philosophy.

What's the difference between Nursery and Reception?

Nursery and Reception both sit within the EYFS framework, but Reception is more structured and marks the first year of compulsory school-age education. Children in Reception typically follow a more defined daily timetable and begin working towards the Early Learning Goals ahead of Year 1.

Is Reception part of EYFS or Key Stage 1?

Reception is the final year of the EYFS, not Key Stage 1. Key Stage 1 begins in Year 1, when children move on to the National Curriculum. This means Reception is still play-based and developmentally focused, even as it lays the groundwork for more formal learning.

What does a typical day look like in Reception at Orchard House School?

Children arrive at our dedicated Early Years building at 2 Rupert Road between 8.30 and 8.45am, with the day combining Montessori and skills-based learning, literacy and maths, phonics in ability sets, and specialist lessons in PE, Music, Computing, Eurhythmics and French. The school day ends between 3.30 and 3.45pm, with Wraparound provision available until 6pm Monday-Thursday and 5:30pm on Fridays. Breakfast club is also available daily from 7:30am.

How do you support children moving from Nursery into Reception?

Children in Orchard House Nursery progress automatically into Reception, keeping the same familiar environment and continuous curriculum. Families joining from a Little Dukes nursery benefit from guaranteed entry, subject to availability, while new joiners are invited to a Taster Morning to meet their teacher and classmates in advance.

How do I apply for a Reception place at Orchard House School?

Start by getting in touch with the admissions team for an initial conversation and then book a visit. Small group tours run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings during term time, alongside two Open Mornings a year. You will then be invited to register your child and offers are typically sent around 18 months before your child is due to start, in the Spring Term of the year before entry. Upon accepting your offer you will be required to pay a £3,000 deposit and sign the parent contract to secure your child’s place.

What should my child be able to do before starting Reception?

There’s no strict checklist – Reception is designed to meet children where they are. That said, growing independence with things like getting dressed, using the toilet independently and communicating needs all help children settle in confidently.
