Music & Performing Arts

Our Performing Arts Ethos

Music and drama at Orchard House aren’t just subjects; they are vibrant, joyful cornerstones of school life that spark creativity, build confidence and create unforgettable memories for our children. From their earliest days in Eurhythmics, where rhythm, movement and music come alive through play, our pupils are encouraged to listen, imagine, and create. As they progress, they are supported to explore their individual talents, whether that’s composing, acting, singing, playing an instrument, working behind the scenes or a combination of them all. Our inclusive approach ensures every child has the opportunity to shine.

The strength of our Music and Drama provision is reflected in our children’s success. In the past year alone, 14 scholarships have been awarded to leading senior schools across both disciplines. Pupils also achieve recognition at regional music and drama festivals, receiving awards and commendations for their talent and commitment.

Music

Music at Orchard House is thriving. Each week, over 200 individual lessons take place across a wide range of instruments, from piano and violin to guitar, drums, and voice. Specialist peripatetic teachers guide and inspire pupils at every level—whether they are discovering their first notes or preparing for advanced performance opportunities.

Music Curriculum

In the classroom, music is introduced from the earliest years. Our Nursery children are introduced to eurhythmics, a movement-based approach that uses play to develop rhythm, coordination, and listening. As they progress, pupils explore percussion, recorders, ukuleles, music technology, and composition. Singing and music appreciation are at the heart of lessons, exposing pupils to diverse genres and encouraging both enjoyment and analysis.

A distinctive highlight is our Wider Opportunities scheme in Year 3. Every pupil is given the chance to try woodwind, string, and brass instruments, with free instrument loans and weekly tuition. This opens the door to ensemble playing and sparks new musical passions.
To support formal progression, Orchard House also hosts in-house ABRSM exam sessions each term. This provides pupils with a supportive environment to showcase their progress and celebrate achievement.

Productions & Performances

The energy of our music culture extends far beyond lessons. Pupils can join over 12 ensembles, from flute and recorder groups to strings, brass, guitars, and an A Cappella choir. Our school orchestra continues to grow in size and ambition, while five choirs thrive across the school—from Juniors and Seniors to Chamber Choir and even a Parents & Teachers Choir.

Performance is at the heart of this culture. Pupils take to the stage in concerts, Rising Stars recitals, and weekly assemblies, as well as major events such as the Carol Concert, Spring Concert, and the much-loved Petter Cup Musician of the Year competition. Watch Phoebe’s 2025 winning performance below. Many also represent the school in external competitions, including the Richmond and Ealing Music Festivals, and perform at community events such as the Bedford Park Festival. These experiences build confidence, celebrate talent, and nurture a lifelong love of performing.

Drama

Drama at Orchard House provides pupils with the chance to step into new roles, stories, and creative experiences. It develops confidence, creativity, and collaboration, while giving every child a voice on stage.

Drama Curriculum

From the Early Years onwards, drama is woven into the school week. For our youngest pupils, lessons focus on imaginative play, storytelling, and developing early performance skills. As children progress, they explore techniques such as improvisation, freeze-frame, devised theatre, and character development. Pupils are also introduced to backstage skills, including lighting, sound, and even camera work to broaden their understanding of how theatre comes to life.

Productions & Performances

Performance is at the heart of our drama journey. Nursery and Reception children begin with magical Nativity plays, while Years 1 and 2 enjoy festive productions that give them their first chance to perform with microphones on stage. Each year, pupils grow in confidence through class assemblies and drama festivals, before culminating in the Year 6 Summer Production at the POSK Theatre. Complete with live music, lighting, and staging, recent shows such as Shrek! The Musical Jr and Oliver! have been truly spectacular highlights for pupils and parents alike.
